Serena Hotels has just won a raft of awards in the prestigious World Travel Awards which concluded on Saturday. These awards are the ‘Oscars’ of the hospitality industry that have been recognizing and awarding winners in the travel and tourism industry for the last 22 years and the win is certainly a stamp to the high quality of service and operations that the hotel chain maintains. These wins are welcome news in the ailing tourism industry.
Among the awards that Serena hotels in African scooped are Rwanda’s Leading Hotel which went to Kigali Serena, Uganda’s Leading Hotel which went to Kampala Serena and Uganda’s Leading Hotel Suite which went to the presidential suit at Lake Victoria Serena Resort and Spa. Closer home, Serena Nairobi scooped the awards for Kenya’s Leading Hotel and Africa’s Leading Green Hotel. The green award in particular recognizes the Nairobi Serena for committed and sustainable preservation of the environment. This is not the first time that Nairobi Serena has won it, having been the proud holders of the crown in 2008 and 2009 also. Despite the few years break, the hotel is now back at the top spot.
Why green? Simple. With our careless tendencies, some knowingly and some out of ignorance, humanity has ruined the environment to quite an extent. The results of our actions are already evident in the fact that Mother Nature is hitting hard the world over with disasters that can be directly attributed to environmental degradation. Unless we start deliberately reversing these damages, who knows how bad the disasters will get in future? It is up to everyone to do their part to protect the environment by doing what is immediately within their reach.

The Nairobi Serena for example has implemented a range of environmental protection practices over the years, some of which include their staff members going to take part in green CSR projects. In 2013 for example, Serena Nairobi which has its own nursery for indigenous trees took part in the then twestival drive by donating 750 seedlings towards the initiative whose aim was rehabilitation of the Nairobi National Park. Nairobi Serena staff members joined other green enthusiast to go and plant trees. These staff tree planting activities are not a one off, but rather an annual activity.
Special projects aside, the hotel is environment conscious even in their daily operational practices. Some of these are the use of biodegradable detergents to reduce chemical use, controlled linen wash to save water, recycling waste and garbage, use of light censors to save power and having a water sanitation facility in the premises. The hotel has also taken deliberate steps towards visitor education and involvement in greener living. Furthermore, with a healthy population of trees and greenery, the Nairobi Serena grounds speak towards the hotel’s cause in environmental conservation. It is clear to see why the ‘Africa’s Green Hotel’ award was Serena’s for the taking.
Green practices in the hospitality industry will go a long way in environmental protection and rehabilitation. We applaud Nairobi Serena for deliberately taking an environment friendly path and we congratulate them for the well deserved awards.
