Maternity wear has come a long way over the years. Growing up, it seemed to me that being pregnant meant wearing the ugliest frocks in town. I was young and only came to learn of the necessity for loose fitting clothing when I grew older and understood the needs and demands of a pregnancy. Times have changed, fashion trends are changing and maternity wear has not been left behind. Many a modern woman do not want to look frumpy just because they’re pregnant and the fashion world has responded by seeing to it that there is something trendy for the pregnant mum in just about every category of fashion. Now, one can be pregnant and stylish without compromising on much needed comfort.
Just yesterday I was admiring one Bernice Mugambi at her baby shower which was held at Shebeen Restaurant in Upper Hill. The heavily pregnant beauty queen is the reigning Miss World Kenya Tharaka Nithi as well as former Miss University of Nairobi. The young achiever who is epileptic but seems to have vowed not to let the illness stand in her way of family is also the Epilepsy Ambassador to the National Epilepsy Coordination Committee. At the baby shower which was organized by her friends and had all the gifts sponsored by OLX, Bernice wore a stunning orange empire waist gown which just a few years back would not be associated with a last trimester pregnancy. Her style showed just how much the modern mother is embracing not just style, but glamour too, upto to the last stages of pregnancy.
The humble and down to earth Bernice was moved to tears by the kind gesture by her friends who organized the details of the baby shower in complete secrecy from her. She was clearly pleasantly surprised to see so many of her friends and to receive so many beautiful and functional gifts as she prepares to bring her baby girl to the world. In attendance were close family members including her husband who was in on the surprise plan the whole time, close friends from as far back as primary school, campus friends, as well as fellow Miss World Kenya crown holders from other counties.
Among the gifts she received and which were all shopped for from the classifieds site OLX were a baby cot, cot sheets, bottle sterilizer, bottle warmers, nursing pillow, rompers, Moses basket, diaper bags, baby bassinet, and the cutest littlest baby booties. The gifts were worth Kshs.50,000/- and were gifted to the lucky mother to be by OLX through the campaign Zawadika na OLX.
