There is a 100% chance that you have at least one account in any of the many social media sites that are active today, and if you do not, then you know someone that does. If you don’t, then you have in the very least heard about social media at one time or the other and if you haven’t then you are living in another planet. Come back to Earth.

There are many social media sites today and more keep getting invented by the day-Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Google +, Snapchat, Pinterest, Foursquare…the list is long. We use most of these sites for informal and social purposes like connecting with friends and acquaintances that are far away, sharing our thoughts and opinions on current happenings in the world and the like. However, there is more to social media than creating and laughing at memes and stalking our exes. There are a thousand and one ways you can use your social media presence in a positive and more productive light, which could even send some good money your way! Here are a few:

Use your accounts to showcase your products or services if you are involved in business. If you are a musician, artist or writer, you are your product. Post your stuff on whatever site you deem fit and increase the amount of exposure. There are a tonne of people who have gotten their businesses or jobs up and running, just by using social media.

Being up to date about everything your favourite socialite is involved in, does not add much value to your life. Sure, it might entertain you for a while, but that is as far as it goes. You can increase customer satisfaction and loyalty by engaging them in social media. Companies today have adopted this strategy to solve their customers’ issues and to provide solutions. Let your customers converse with you in social media and create a good rapport with them. It is more convenient and saves on time.

Gain knowledge and try to learn new things every day on social media

You will never come across anyone that says that they know everything that is on the internet. It is a vast jungle of information and content. Make a point of learning something new and useful every day in place of watching cat and twerking videos all the time. I don’t have anything against cats or twerking really, it’s just that there is more to life than that.

Lastly, remember that your online habits say a lot about you. Whatever you post stays online, even when you delete it. Talk about issues affecting society rather than just telling people what you had for lunch. Do not say things that will later ricochet and bite you in your rear side, for instance going ham on a company where you might seek employment some day.

Social media is a powerful tool. Choose to use it positively and productively.
