Gaming Laptops – Not That Complicated After All

by Gathoni Wanjiku

Gaming laptops does not sound like something a girl would be quick to be interested in. As a matter of fact, there are no gaming devices customized for the ‘softer’ gender in the market. The twist is that what keeps the boys glued to the screen during a game is either a great firing machine or a beautiful woman that is badass! Anyway, my point here is that we should try and warm up to gaming devices, and more so laptops.

Again, the issue of twisted technology that comes with purchasing devices is something a girl does not want to go through. I got your back and I will let you in on one that I have been using and maybe I stand to be a better catch now!….or not.

The GL552 ASUS Gaming Laptop is just another piece added to the rapidly growing Asus gaming portfolio.

At a glance, the laptop gives away a rough and rugged feel that is what die hard gamers want from a gaming device. However the GL552 is a smooth plastic device with an appealing lid incorporated with a back lit metallic ROG Logo that gives it an alien feel.

The plastic material is well played with an artificial metallic finish that gives it a sleek look for a gaming device. The manufacturing company has gone quite ahead of competition with the 2.5 kg weighing machine which is good enough for a full-fledged laptop considering other devices go up to 10kgs.

The well layout keyboard is back-lit in red, bringing with it the gaming mood. The WASD Keys heighten accessibility to all gaming keys for direction and other functionalities. WASD keys are simply the W, A, S and D keys on the keyboard, which are used as the up, left, down and right arrow keys respectively. They’re used to give the gamer access to more keys around them and so he/she is able to assign these surrounding keys to other functions in the game.

The gaming laptop provides one VGA port, one HDMI port, LAN and two USB 3.0 ports on the left whereas the right side has one 2.0 port and two 3.5mm jacks for headphones and external microphone.

The plastic material might raise questions of proper ventilation with fears it might be too hot to touch at some point. Asus has covered that with well-placed fans with the main heat dispersing grill on the left. Besides that, the 32.4 mm thickness of the gaming notebook facilitates enough cooling down.

Compared to other gaming devices of its kind, the response time was far much better with up to four times efficiency between fall time and rise time.

The display uses a Samsung panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution.  The colour accuracy seems almost flawless, meaning patches and uninvited strips on the display are unnoticeable. However, you will notice flickering of the screen when using high brightness, which means the laptop is not suitable for gaming or work under high brightness.

The Graphics card responsible for response time and color performance- the GeForce GTX 950M is one of the best in the market. The 1Terabyte hard disk drive provides ample storage space for the common gamer paired with Internal Core i7 and 8GB RAM facilitate fast browsing, app launching and most importantly supports heavy gaming.

The battery is a 4-cell with a capacity of 3200 mAh which is not very pleasant for a machine that is expected to support hours of gaming.

Gaming laptops can also be used for normal work although it is a bit heavy for a normal laptop. Combining the laptop for both work and gaming might disappoint you due to the battery performance. The laptop caters for users without an extra budget to purchase high-end laptops considering most of its features are pretty decent for the price.
