Kikao Kikuu Nyandarua County Edition – Wins And Challenges Discussed At The Forum

by Femme Staff

The 18th edition of Communication Authority’s public forums Kikao Kikuu took place in Nyandarua today at Ol Kalou Stadium. I was present at the event and judging from the huge number of people that showed up, people are interested in what their county Government is upto as far as communication is concerned, and they are keen to learn about what options are available for local challenges.

Present at the event to discuss ICT matters affecting Nyandarua was of course Communication Authority officials as well as Governor Francis Kimemia with his entire cabinet. This was quite impressive as it shows a commitment on the part of CA and Governments to move things forward as far as improving the lives of the people is concerned. After all, ICT is experiencing huge leaps globally and nobody wants to be left behind.

The acting Director of CA Mrs. Mercy Wanjau who was one of the main speakers was impressed with the strides that Nyandarua has taken in ICT matters and advised that “To reap even richer benefits, the County can further tap into  the National Optic Fibre Broadband Infrastructure (NOFBI),  the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) Fibre, and other networks deployed  by the private sector, to enhance its service delivery”.

On his part, Governor Francis Kimemia appreciated that indeed ICT is helping not only the public but also schools and even his Government to get things running smoother. Without belittling the strides already made, he noted that the scenario over there is not without challenges, some of them being lack of strong internet connectivity in some areas, and even lack of mobile signal by some players in others. He appealed to mobile connectivity providers who do not already have strong presence in the county to invest there.

He also noted that Nyandarua has one of the poorest fiber optic connections in central region and also invited players in this field to make things better. Other challenges that the county is facing are low computer literacy and low gadget penetration.

Among many other things, she did not forget to mention Nyandarua’s sons and daughters who are doing big in the music scene and who have very huge number of views on YouTube, which is in itself ICT.

Other challenges that Nyandarua is facing are low computer literacy and the fact that cyber cafes where people can learn and practice ICT are very few and far between. The county is however working to have schools on broadband and as we know, education centers is where it all starts. Already, Shamata Girls, Njabini Boys, Mt. Kinangop Girls, Karima Girls and Magomano High school have been connected. ICT enables more children to affordably access learning content. This area has huge potential for growth in enabling online education and facilitating open online content in large quantities.

Kikao Kikuu is a beautiful initiative by Communication Authority and County Governments and as more and more counties are visited, the fruits will certainly be visible in a few years.
