AutoGas Eldoret Clean Transport initiative cuts fuel costs, lowers emissions, creates jobs, and supports mobility across Kenya
A new petrol station offering AutoGas (LPG) opened in Eldoret this week, marking a practical step in Kenya’s transition toward cleaner and more affordable transport fuels, especially in secondary cities where fuel costs and vehicle emissions continue to rise.
The station, launched through a partnership between Oryx Energies and Gasfil Kenya, is designed to support motorists and commercial transport operators as they move away from petrol toward lower-carbon alternatives such as LPG. Eldoret, a key logistics and agricultural hub in western Kenya, has been chosen as a pilot city for cleaner transport infrastructure outside Nairobi.
“AutoGas is a cleaner fuel with lower carbon emissions, and it is way cheaper than petrol or diesel,” said James Macharia, Managing Director and CEO of Gasfil Kenya. “Motorists can save around 30 to 40 per cent on fuel costs, while also benefiting from improved engine sustainability. We are also creating jobs locally, including training students from polytechnics in vehicle conversion and maintenance.”
James Ngugi, Head of Business at Oryx Energies, added: “This is a key partnership for us, reflecting Oryx Energies’ commitment to cleaner fuels and ESG priorities. AutoGas is a practical, lower-emission alternative, and this flagship station in Eldoret is just the beginning. We plan to expand our network and continue collaborating with Gasfil to bring more hybrid stations to Kenya.”
Beyond fuel savings, the initiative is expected to stimulate local employment through vehicle conversion, maintenance, and safety inspection services. Both Oryx Energies and Gasfil Kenya are planning further expansion, aiming to open additional stations across the country in 2026, offering motorists more accessible and affordable low-carbon fuel options.
“This launch is not just about a new fueling point, but about enabling practical pathways for cleaner mobility in Kenya,” Macharia said. “Secondary cities like Eldoret are critical to economic growth, and initiatives like this help balance affordability, reliability, and environmental responsibility.”
As Kenya explores multiple routes to decarbonise transport, the Eldoret station highlights a pragmatic approach that blends environmental goals with economic realities in fast-growing urban centres.
