Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has been awarded the Energy Management Compliance Certificate by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). This recognition is a result of KBL’s proactive efforts in adhering to the Energy Management Regulations of 2012, demonstrating their commitment to efficient energy practices.
These initiatives encompass conducting a comprehensive energy audit of investment-grade, formulating an energy investment plan, adopting an energy management policy, investing in team training, and appointing a dedicated Energy Manager to lead their endeavors.
The compliance has helped KBL achieve substantial energy savings, surpassing their targets in both electricity and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) consumption. The savings amounted to more than 50% of the energy conservation measures identified in the initial audit.
Speaking at the issuance ceremony, the EPRA Director General, Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, OGW, said Kenya’s manufacturing sector is one of the highest energy-consuming sectors, utilizing up to fifty per cent of electricity in the country as of 2022.
“It is encouraging to see manufacturers like KBL continue to demonstrate commitment to energy efficiency not because of the regulations but because it makes business sense. KBL’s efforts are contributing to Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) towards the Paris Agreement on climate change. Additionally, through their energy efficiency practices, they are easing the strain on our National Grid and the entire energy supply value chain”, said Mr Kiptoo.

The outstanding performance in energy efficiency has earned KBL several awards, including the Overall Energy Management Awards in 2019 and 2022, organized by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.
KBL’s most significant highlight is the launch of their Biomass Plants in 2022, which positions them as a trailblazer and leader in environmental stewardship and conservation. The investment in four biomass boilers in Kisumu and Tusker plants will help the manufacturer reduce their carbon emissions by 95% (about 34,000 tonnes) per year.
